How to Choose The Right Crystal for Yourself

Discover 2 step-by-step methods on how to pick out the right crystal for yourself or your friend

Social share

We all have been told at least once that we should wear our birthstones based on our astrological signs.

I am here to break this myth for you.

There are two ways to choose "the right" stone - Intuition and complete Birth Chart reading

Note that this is based on my personal experience and findings when working with stones and creating personalized jewellery for beautiful souls. As different stones carry different energies, it is relevant to consider the topic from the standpoint of metaphysics and energy. Let's dive right in so that you can choose the method that works best for you!

#1 Choosing Your Crystal Intuitively

My absolute god damn favorite technique that never makes mistakes. Instead of first explaining to you how intuition works, let me share a personal story. A story about how the right crystal will always find you if you listen to your intuition:
Two years ago, I discovered this majestic stone on the internet called Tanzanite (see picture on the right).

Tanzanite is a geological phenomenon mined only at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro that contains traces of vanadium which gives the stone its magnetizing purple hue. Simply knowing how special the stone is made it highly attractive to me. However, being so rare the stone had to be ordered online as there are barely any places that sell this specimen ... And as we all do sometimes, I postponed it once, then twice and then again and again. Time went by and every effort I made was forgotten. Until this very autumn day.

The day when my grandma asked me: "Is there anything that you would wan to buy for yourself but have been too greedy to do so?". I told her about this magical stone that I have been drawn towards for the past two years but I broke down her faith by explaining that it is impossible to buy it in Latvia (where we were at the time). Being a witch, my grandma threw a smirk at me and said "Okay, anyways let's go to the crystal store to buy beads for bracelets". We entered the huge store with hundreds of different stones, meter-long strings of stone beads on the right, gold jewellery furniture on the left, my eyes were completely blown away. I walked. And I walked. And walked ...

To my surprise, I haven't found A SINGLE STONE I FELT DRAWN TO.

I even thought of this as a joke so I at least purchased some pearls. Time to leave crept up, grandma gathered all of her crafts and then she asked me "Which stone do you want to get for your bracelet, Darling?". The truth was I haven't found anything and that was my answer. With her second smirk and kindness in her eyes, she went up to the counter at the entrance of the store and picked up some beads I haven't noticed with the name Zoisite on it. "You need this one - I feel it." So I picked up those gorgeous Ruby Zoisite beads (see picture on the left).

I rushed home, made my bracelet and decided to look up its meaning.

- "Hello Google! Tell me about Zoisite stone and its properties".
- "Sure thing, Ruby Zoisite is a rare mineral that is mined in Tanzania with the most phenomenal stone variety being Tanzanite."

My jaw dropped. Then I laughed because this is exactly what happens with the right stones for you - they always find you in one way or another.
The reason why we are drawn to specific stones is because we need their specific energy.
Maybe there is a physical imbalance in some part of our body or an imbalance in our life (excessive stress, anxiety, self-esteem troubles, fears, etc.). Stones come into our lives to help us heal the imbalance, invite more of the energy we lack or calm down the energy we have in excess.

Intuitive Stone Choosing Method

Here is a simple method that you can use whether you are at the crystal/jewellery shop or browsing stones online:
1
Grounding - Connect to Your Senses
Start by closing your eyes and drawing attention to your breathing. Simply observe your breath - notice how belly expands on inhales and how it lowers on exhales. Become conscious of every small movement that you can notice.
2
Activate Your Intuition
Shift your attention to the space behind your breastbone - the abode of your heart. Try to notice any warm sensations in that area - you can visualise how green light is emanating from your heart on every exhale.
3
Ask for Guidance
When feeling connected to your heart, your Higher Self, Universe, God (whatever you prefer to call it), express your intention. Ask your heart, guides to assist you in choosing the right stone for you at this exact moment. Mention any specific intentions that you want the stone to help you with or simply ask it to be a surprise.
4
Open for Answer
Express your gratitude for the guidance and go on about your crystal/jewellery shopping - walk around the store in the direction that you feel like going, browse the online store however you feel like. As soon as something picks your interest even the slightest bit - seize your answer, this is your guy.

#2 Choosing Your Crystal Using Birth Chart

Astrology is a powerful tool when used wisely and to its full potential. It is not magic but a system developed by highly observant people that have noted correlations between physical events, trends, people's behaviors and astronomical bodies.

Your Sun sign is only the tip of the iceberg. Here is what a full Birth Chart looks like:
As you can see there are many more aspects to be considered. Vedic astrology uses 12 house system that helps to create a holistic picture of an individuals life and personality. For example, first house's sign, planets and aspects represent one's appearance, sense of self and style; while seventh house represents one's dynamics with long-term relationships and partners.

When using individual's Birth Chart for choosing their unique stone, I first consider what is the area of life that they want to improve/work on/balance. Then I choose the house that carries the meaning of their intention and only then the most fun part comes. It is time to become a forensic astrologeršŸ˜Ž Let me make it easier for you by providing an example.

Example of Choosing The Right Stone Based on a Birth Chart

Let's use Queen's Britney Spears Birth Chart as an example and let's imagine she came in asking "I feel like my relationships with family are quite tight, I want something to help me work on them, bring more love and balance"

Okay Britney, that's a broad request, forensic astrologer mode is one, let's see what your astrology says!

You can see Britney's Chart on the left.
1
Find house that represents one's intention
Family life is represented by 4th House and in Britney's case it is ruled by an earth sign Capricorn. This already tells us about a tendency of business-like relationships in the family.
2
Find planetary ruler of the house
Capricorn is considered to be ruled by planet Saturn in Vedic astrology. Saturn is a karmic planet, a so-called teacher that makes us grow through making mistakes and getting hurt. This will be our first planet of interest to find crystals for.
3
See for other planets in the house
Britney has her beautiful planet Venus that represents love, relationships, material wealth in the 4th house. However, this doesn't automatically mean that this planet is making her family life dynamics harder. Looking at the aspects (lines connecting the planets across the chart) that Venus makes to other planets we see more harmonious aspects (sextiles and trines - green and purple lines). Nonetheless, there is a square (red line) to Saturn and Pluto which are the toughest planets out there and a square induces challenges. Let's keep both Saturn and Venus in mind then.
4
Choose the challenging planets
The investigation on Britney suggests that Saturn and Venus are the culprit of her disputes in family life. But she shouldn't worry because there are crystals to harmonize any planet's energy!
5
Choose the right stones
Time to the last step! Its time to choose the stones for our pop star. A quick Google search tells me that the key stones associated with Saturn are Blue Saphire, Onyx, Black Tourmaline, Amethyst and Smoky Quartz. Whereas for Venus it's Rose Quartz, Opal, Malachite, Rhodonite and Moonstone. That's a great variety to choose from so why not make her a bracelet out of a two-stone combination!
Dear Britney, here is your answer

I recommend that as a person with a Capricorn, Saturn and Venus heavily influencing your family life you get a bracelet made out of Black tourmaline and Malachite. It is a strong combination. Malachite will invite more openness in your relationships, while black tourmaline will make sure that you are protected from negative energies when opening up.

Summary

The way you choose your crystal will always be the right way. Your stone will simply find its way to your either though intuition and chance or through some forensic investigation.

Personally, I love to use a combination of both. First doing my research on a person's birth chart and then intuitively feel which stones could the person benefit from at this very moment.
